As I sat in the prayer garden one day this past summer, I was looking at the placards on the fence. There are names of people who are now in heaven. They were faithful here on earth and are now with Jesus. In Hebrews 12, the Bible says, “therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us.” I think about the people in this church who have worked so hard for many years, and now are in heaven. When they were here, they served God and were faithful. They let their light shine.
It was also sobering when I realized that I always need to be letting my light shine and do all I can do for Jesus. There will be things that try to hold us back, but as we keep our eyes on Jesus, he will give us the strength to do what we need to do. Sometimes the weights of fear, worry, and doubt begin to be heavy burdens, and I realize I need to keep my eyes on Jesus, who is “the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.”
